York 2025 - A Trip Back in Time (Day 1)

It was time for our long awaited holiday to York. We had been really eager to see the musical Six but it was completely sold out at the theatres we usually go to, however we came across some tickets in York. We figured that it wasn't too far for us to go, and could make a fun few days away, so decided to book. York is somewhere that Nicole visited as a child but hadn't been to since, and Shannon had not visited before, which meant there was lots of exploring to do!

On our first day, after a couple of hours drive from home, we had scheduled to visit the York Castle Museum. We had booked tickets for after lunch, which allowed us time to explore the city. We had booked an AirBnB in Clifton, which is about 20 minutes walk from the centre of York, so decided to park our car there and wander in. When we reached York, we were first met with some spectacular views of York Minster which, as you wander round, is far bigger than it would seem on an initial glance. We headed to The Shambles market in search of some lunch. After having a look at everything on offer, we agreed on gyros from Ambrosia Greek Street Food. Nicole had a halloumi and roasted vegetable wrap and Shannon had chicken. Both were served with tzatziki and some seasoned chips, and were a delicious way to start our holiday. After enjoying our lunch, we explored the shops along The Shambles and eyed up some purchases for later in the week.

We took the short walk to York Castle Museum ready for our time slot, and headed in to learn more about the history of York. This museum, unlike its name, is situated inside the old York prison and in a building steeped in history. As museums go, this is one that we both enjoyed and would recommend. It had a good combination of information to read and engaging displays. The highlight of the museum has to be the Victorian street. We were lucky enough to be there at the time when one of the museum staff was giving a short talk on the history of the museum, and it was fascinating to hear about the origin of the materials used to make up the street. The visit was topped off with being able to buy some sweets from the mock-up sweet shop!

After we had finished at the museum, we went to our second food stop of the day, Crumbles Desserts. This came highly recommended from Tikok, and did not disappoint. Shannon opted for apple and blackberry crumble and Nicole had apple and cinnamon with a brulee topping. The crumble was crunchy, sweet and moreish, and the whole dessert was heavenly. Definitely somewhere we would happily head back to again in the future.

Once we had finished our crumble, we went to the Ghost Merchants. We decided to go to the 'quieter' shop situated in St Anthony's Gardens. We still waited for at least half an hour to enter the shop as it is a very small store with limited capacity. However, it was worth it, and we both selected a special ghost as a souvenir of our trip to York.

Once we had finished, and due to now having very sore feet, we wandered back towards our AirBnB. The place we selected was a small townhouse hosted by Chris and Gosia, and offered a small living space, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and dressing room across three levels, in addition to an off-road parking space. It provided everything we needed for our three nights away, and was situated close to a couple of small shops so we could get ourselves some tea.

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Harry Potter Adventure 2023 - Driving down south (Day 1)

Over the past few years, Nicole has been invited to guest lecture at the University of Reading. This year the lecture was face-to-face for the first time since COVID. This meant that we made it into a mini holiday break. Why not when it is such a long way to drive! We set off as soon as we could on Saturday morning as we were hoping to stop off at Henley for some lunch and a wander before we set off to our AirBnB for the weekend. The drive down felt very long! I don’t know if this was due to setting off earlier, so we didn’t have lunch halfway down, or maybe I am just getting a bit more impatient with long journeys. We made it down with few issues and hit Henley at just the right time for lunch. However, during the last few minutes of the car journey, I spotted a bird I had not seen before and soon became fixated on finding out what the mystery bird was. I didn’t think I would need to bring the binoculars and bird identifier book so had left it at home. I had it in my head it was a big...

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
