York 2025 - Six! (Day 2)

This was the day that was long awaited. But, before we headed to the theatre, we had a full day of exploring ahead of us. Our first stop today was the city walls. As we had plenty of time in between things we had booked, we decided to take a leisurely stroll around the east side of the city which offered views of York Minster and took us over Foss Island.

When we reached the castle museum, we left the walls behind for now headed back through the city to York Minster and the Treasurer's House, a property managed by the National Trust. Most of the year, the Treasurer's House is open to view by guided tour only, so we had booked onto this (free of charge using our National Trust memberships). We have to say, the tour was really engaging and provided us with a wealth of information about the house, its various furnishings and its history. We were really pleased that it offered the tour as we got so much more out of it this way than if we had walked around ourselves.

After our tour, it was time for lunch, and off to somewhere else Nicole had seen online. This time, it was to The Cheese Trader. This is a small cheese shop that also offers some delicious cheesey street food. As were due to go out for dinner in the evening, we decided we would go for the slightly lighter option of 'posh cheese on toast'. For this, you can choose one of four cheeses and one of the selected toppings. Nicole had brie and sundried tomato and Shannon had cheddar and salami. If you are a fan of cheese on toast, this lunch will definitely not disappoint! As well as the cheese and selected topping, the bread also has some sweet red onion chutney to give it an extra flavour and you can opt for some crunchy onion pieces as well if you wish.

Our next stop was Hole in the Wand, after quickly popping into a bakery for a treat for later. The Hole in the Wand is a Harry Potter themed 9-hole crazy golf. The holes were quite challenging and the obstacles were unique and exciting. At the end, depending on your score, you are provided with a 'potion' to drink. We both earned the Basilisk Blood, which is a mixed fruit flavour. We sat and drank this in the small cafe, and then embarked on our adventure around the rest of the city walls around the west of the city. This took us up to the York Museum gardens, where we could have a short rest before our busy evening.

We had spent a long time trying to find somewhere to have a pre-theatre meal, and stumbled across Mommy Thai, which is a small thai restaurant next to the Grand Opera House. It didn't have much information online as there is no website or facebook page so we were unsure if it was actually still open. But, much to our delight, it was. The menu offered a selection of traditional Thai starters and mains for an affordable price. Shannon selected her usual of chicken crispy wontons and a yellow chicken curry and Nicole had her usual of vegetable spring rolls and tofu massaman curry. Both were delicious. Once we had enjoyed our meal, we just had enough time to sit by the river and enjoy our treats from the Savvy Bakery that we picked up earlier in the day - a kinder and a biscoff stuffed cookie. Let's just say, after a two course Thai meal and a sweet, rich and indulgent cookie, we were both definitely stuffed!

It was then time for Six, and it was so worth the wait! The show was exactly what we were hoping it would be an more. It had us singing along and we enjoyed every moment. Definitely one for us to see again!

Wales 2024 - An underground adventure (Day 2)

Day 2 of our holiday started with a unique adventure. We had booked ourselves onto a session of underground golf at Zip World Llechwedd. On our way there, as we had plenty of time, we stopped off at Cwmorthin waterfall . The instructions that Nicole found stated that it was a 10 minute stroll from the car park to the waterfall, however in reality it was a lot less than this. The waterfall is the start of a longer walk if you want to adventure further. As we were just stopping off, we admired the waterfall and then journeyed on.  After checking in at Zip World and making sure we were kitted up with our safety helmets, we started our underground golf session. For this, we headed underground on the cable railway to an unused cave which was kitted out as an 18-hole crazy golf course on four levels. The course itself offered plenty of challenging obstacles, and even included a slide to get down to the final two holes. Somehow Shannon seems to keep winning when we play crazy golf, and t...

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
