York 2025 - Horrible Smells and Tasty Treats (Day 3 & 4)

For our third and final day in York, we had a couple more touristy places to visit. First, we headed to JORVIK Viking Centre to find out all about the city's Viking history. This is somewhere that you wouldn't want to visit if you don't have a strong stomach, as they have made the experience realistic in many senses including imitating the smells of Viking York. The museum involves a short talk about York's history, a 20 minute ride which takes you through their recreation of what parts of York would have been like during the Viking age, and then an area with various artefacts to view. We found it really interesting and learnt a lot about how the Vikings lived.

After we escaped the horrible smells of JORVIK, we headed back to The Cheese Trader for lunch. Nicole had been eyeing up two options on the menu the day before and so we decided to make sure we tried both. Today we opted for the dirty loaded fries, which are a huge box of seasoned fries topped with cheese of your choice from four options (we selected a small baked camembert) and a topping (we selected spring onions). We also had crispy fried onions and sriracha mayo on top. The portion was huge, but the combination of the camembert and fries made for a very naughty but delicious lunch!

Our second activity for the day was the York's Chocolate Story. We were slightly early, so we stopped off to watch some of the street theatre outside before our time slot. The chocolate story went through the history of chocolate manufacture in York which, unknown to us before our trip, was the home of Rowntrees, Terry's and Craven. We also didn't realise that Rowntrees once made some of the most famous chocolate treats such as KitKats, smarties and Aero, before they were taken over by Nestle. The chocolate story offered tasting in each room, an opportunity to make a chocolate lollipop and a chocolate making demonstration. Just a warning on some of the tasters, a few of them are very dark chocolate and quite bitter, so it may be worth just trying a small amount to decide if you like it before having the whole piece. This experience was a great way to end our trip and both informative and fun.

We finished our day in York by a bit of shopping, before going back to our AirBnB to play our new Viking raider game and enjoy our pastries (Lemon Crumble and Apple Crumble) from Heppni Bakeri!

Before we headed home from York after one more night in our AirBnB, we just had time for a quick stop at another local National Trust property, Beninbrough Hall. This is a house with more than 300 years of history, and which is in the middle of having a huge transformation of its gardens. We enjoyed the opportunity for a wander around to learn about the history of the house, and then sat down for some lunch in the restaurant. We then made the short journey home ready to unpack and set off to Squirrels.

Wales 2024 - An underground adventure (Day 2)

Day 2 of our holiday started with a unique adventure. We had booked ourselves onto a session of underground golf at Zip World Llechwedd. On our way there, as we had plenty of time, we stopped off at Cwmorthin waterfall . The instructions that Nicole found stated that it was a 10 minute stroll from the car park to the waterfall, however in reality it was a lot less than this. The waterfall is the start of a longer walk if you want to adventure further. As we were just stopping off, we admired the waterfall and then journeyed on.  After checking in at Zip World and making sure we were kitted up with our safety helmets, we started our underground golf session. For this, we headed underground on the cable railway to an unused cave which was kitted out as an 18-hole crazy golf course on four levels. The course itself offered plenty of challenging obstacles, and even included a slide to get down to the final two holes. Somehow Shannon seems to keep winning when we play crazy golf, and t...

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
