Paris 2025 - A Zoo-tastical Day Out (Day 4)

For our second day in Paris, we had two tourist activities we wanted to do. These were Notre Dame and the Sacre-Coer. We had read online that you could book tickets for the Notre Dame a few days in advance so we attempted to do this. However, when logging on multiple times in the two days prior to our desired visit the website stated they were sold out for our chosen date. We decided to check one last time on the morning of our visit and managed to secure ourselves some tickets which meant we had a guaranteed time to visit. As it turned out, the queue at 8.30am on a Monday isn't too bad and we didn't really need it, but it was good to have the confidence that we weren't going to have a wasted trip. We embarked on the metro to Citè station, where it was a few minutes walk to Notre Dame. The sights inside the cathedral were spectacular and definitely worth the visit.

After a walk around the cathedral and taking some photos, we had decided to head out of Paris slightly to the zoo. We had thought about a zoo visit when planning our holiday but didn't think we would have time, but having explored a large amount of Paris yesterday, we thought we would take the opportunity to visit. We went via a bakery to Grands Boulevards metro station where we headed to the zoo. We have to say, we were pleasantly surprised by the Paris zoo. There was a unique selection of animals to see such as manatee, seals, a huge variety of lemurs and a wolverine. Sadly we didn't get to see the wolverine as it seems whenever we visit a zoo that has one they are hiding. But the other animals, and the general layout of all the enclosures, made it a very enjoyable experience. The only word of warning would be that if you don't like birds (like Nicole), the greenhouse may not be the best place to visit, however if you can brave it, going in is definitely worth it. Whilst at the zoo we also ate lunch at the Zafara restaurant which offered a selection of meals including burgers, pasta, pizza and salads. Shannon had the beef burger and fries which came with a large slice of brie inside and Nicole had the three cheese pizza and chips. Both were very tasty and excellent for meals purchased at a zoo.

After the zoo, we went back into Paris to the Sacre-Coer. Much to Shannon's dislike, there were a lot more steps to climb here. The views from the top are incredible and there's the option of free entry into the cathedral, which is worth queuing for. We wandered around Monmatre for a short time but probably not long enough to truly enjoy everything it has to offer. If you are someone that enjoys sitting and having a drink, looking at artwork or getting your portrait done, it's definitely the place for you.

It was then time to head back to our AirBnB, detouring via another bakery to pick up a tarte au citron for Nicole, and then to have a relaxing night so we were energised ready for our first day at Disney!

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Harry Potter Adventure 2023 - Driving down south (Day 1)

Over the past few years, Nicole has been invited to guest lecture at the University of Reading. This year the lecture was face-to-face for the first time since COVID. This meant that we made it into a mini holiday break. Why not when it is such a long way to drive! We set off as soon as we could on Saturday morning as we were hoping to stop off at Henley for some lunch and a wander before we set off to our AirBnB for the weekend. The drive down felt very long! I don’t know if this was due to setting off earlier, so we didn’t have lunch halfway down, or maybe I am just getting a bit more impatient with long journeys. We made it down with few issues and hit Henley at just the right time for lunch. However, during the last few minutes of the car journey, I spotted a bird I had not seen before and soon became fixated on finding out what the mystery bird was. I didn’t think I would need to bring the binoculars and bird identifier book so had left it at home. I had it in my head it was a big...

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
