Wales 2024 - Exploring Anglesey (Day 3)

Whilst along the North coast of Wales, we decided that it would be worth heading over to Anglesey. Until we got there, we didn't realise quite how big it was. However, we headed for a few key points that we wanted to explore. The first stop was Llanddwyn Beach, which was a long stretch of sandy beach with a small island to the west that gets cut off at high tide. This beach offered lovely views back onto the mainland and we also managed to spot some oyster catchers on the neighbouring beach. The beach is on the edge of a nature reserve, which boasts chance of seeing red squirrels, but we didn't have time to explore today.

Our next stop was South Stacks Cliffs, which is an RSPB nature reserve. We wandered down to Ellin's Tower, where there was an RSPB volunteer helping to spot and identify bird and other species. We spent some time there, but unfortunately did not see much today, although Shannon did manage to see a grey seal. We headed back towards the visitor centre and wandered down towards South Stacks island, where we saw the lighthouse in action. We opted out of paying to go onto the island and on a lighthouse tour; this is maybe something for a nicer day.

We then headed back down the main road through Anglesey to Plas Newydd House and Garden, which is a national trust property with views across the Menai strait. One of the rooms of the house offered the opportunity to sit and play board games, which was great fun! After viewing the house and wandering around the arboretum, we went to our fourth and final stop.

If you are someone that has read our blog before, you would know that we are keen ice cream fans. So it is probably unsurprising that before we left Anglesey, we headed for some proper Anglesey ice cream at the Red Boat ice cream parlour in Beaumaris. The flavours on offer provided plenty of choice, almost too much to be able to select just two. Shannon chose jammy dodger and jelly baby, and Nicole chose lemon drizzle cake and hazelnut crunch. It was absolutely delicious, and it's definitely a good job we don't live nearby!

Once we had finished our ice creams, we drove back to our AirBnB, before heading out to get some tea. As we were by the coast, we couldn't go without a proper chippy tea. We went to the local chippy in Penrhyn Bay, Frydays, which was very tasty at very affordable prices. Nicole had a cheese and onion pie and chips (we think it was likely a Holland's pie, which is great for northerners!) and Shannon had a long awaited battered burger, which did not disappoint!

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Wales 2024 - An underground adventure (Day 2)

Day 2 of our holiday started with a unique adventure. We had booked ourselves onto a session of underground golf at Zip World Llechwedd. On our way there, as we had plenty of time, we stopped off at Cwmorthin waterfall . The instructions that Nicole found stated that it was a 10 minute stroll from the car park to the waterfall, however in reality it was a lot less than this. The waterfall is the start of a longer walk if you want to adventure further. As we were just stopping off, we admired the waterfall and then journeyed on.  After checking in at Zip World and making sure we were kitted up with our safety helmets, we started our underground golf session. For this, we headed underground on the cable railway to an unused cave which was kitted out as an 18-hole crazy golf course on four levels. The course itself offered plenty of challenging obstacles, and even included a slide to get down to the final two holes. Somehow Shannon seems to keep winning when we play crazy golf, and t...

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
