Southampton 2023 - A geography field trip (Day 2)

On the first full day of our holiday, we had planned to meet Nicole’s sister in the afternoon / evening. Therefore, we decided to venture towards the New Forest. Nicole suggested going to Hengistbury Head, which is a sandstone headland that forms part of the Christchurch Site of Specialist Scientific Interest. It is home to an abundance of different birds and other wildlife, and features breathtaking views across Christchurch Bay, the Isle of Wight and Bournemouth. We had a very pleasant walk along the headland and down onto the spit which features lines of beach huts. As it was a very hot day, it was unsurprisingly busy, but we managed to find somewhere to sit to eat our picnic. We didn’t want to sit for too long due to the risk of getting sunburnt, so we soon headed back and into the visitor centre. This featured a very interesting exhibition that tells you all about the history of Hengistbury Head, the wildlife and the future planned work on conserving the headland.

Once we had filled our heads with knowledge, we had an ice cream from the Hiker Café, which is situated at the main car park where the land train also runs from for those that would like to get to the spit but struggle with walking for too long. This café sells a variety of flavours of Marshfield Ice Cream; all of the flavours we tried were very tasty. The day we chose to go to Hengistbury Head happened to be one of the days of the Bournemouth air show, therefore as an extra treat, we were able to sit and eat our ice cream whilst watching aircraft fly overhead as part of the show.

We finished the day off by going to The Rising Sun Thai & Pan-Asian Restaurant. This was a beautifully decorated restaurant that was perhaps slightly more on the posher side than we usually go for. However, I guess everything down south is a bit posher and more expensive than it is in Lancashire! We started by sharing some vegetable spring rolls and gyoza, both of which were delicious. I then followed this with one of the specials which was a salt and pepper crispy chicken dish. This was very tasty, but, despite saying on the menu it was milder than a thai red curry (which I often find too hot), it was incredibly hot thanks to a huge amount of chilli! Nicole went for a safer option of vegetable massaman curry and rice, something that she always enjoys. We would definitely recommend this restaurant, but would want to prepare you that your meal won’t be cheap!

Wales 2024 - An underground adventure (Day 2)

Day 2 of our holiday started with a unique adventure. We had booked ourselves onto a session of underground golf at Zip World Llechwedd. On our way there, as we had plenty of time, we stopped off at Cwmorthin waterfall . The instructions that Nicole found stated that it was a 10 minute stroll from the car park to the waterfall, however in reality it was a lot less than this. The waterfall is the start of a longer walk if you want to adventure further. As we were just stopping off, we admired the waterfall and then journeyed on.  After checking in at Zip World and making sure we were kitted up with our safety helmets, we started our underground golf session. For this, we headed underground on the cable railway to an unused cave which was kitted out as an 18-hole crazy golf course on four levels. The course itself offered plenty of challenging obstacles, and even included a slide to get down to the final two holes. Somehow Shannon seems to keep winning when we play crazy golf, and t...

Southampton 2022 - Drive home (Day 8)

The drive home was horrendous. There were no less than 10 accidents, there was queues everywhere and the alternative route was suggested through Reading. We did not opt for this route as we didn’t want to head towards the masses of people travelling to London for HRH’s funeral. I think the total journey took us twice as long as it should have and is not one that I would like to do again. Hopefully next time will be better. I didn’t get to twist Nicole’s arm into another Leon’s as we didn’t quite make it there for lunchtime. Let’s see what the next holiday has to offer. We realised when writing the posts from this holiday that we really didn't do a very good job at taking photos. Watch this space for more photos from our future adventures!

Southampton 2023 - Ape-ing Around at Moors Valley (Day 3)

You may have noticed by now that there can tend to be a bit of a theme in our holidays of us at some point doing Go Ape. We have said we would like to have a go at as many of the courses as we can, and also still had some of our gift voucher to spend, therefore decided to tackle Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park . This is somewhere that Nicole used to go a lot when she was younger as it features a play trail, which is a series of different natural and wildlife themed play equipment spread out through the woods. Although we explored this later on, we started our day off with Go Ape. I would say that this Go Ape Course is probably my favourite so far. They seem to have done a lot of work on it since Nicole last completed it (although admittedly this was probably at least 15 years ago!). They have a different safety system in place than the other Go Ape courses we have done, which involves you being connected to the course at all times once you are on a section rather than havin...
